One of the most eagerly awaited Tamil films this Christmas is Nanayam, an action thriller produced by S P B Charan and starring Prasanna, Sibi Raj and S P Balasubramaniam.
Prasanna, an engineer-turned-actor, was last seen and much appreciated as a software professional based in the US in Arun Vaidyanathan’s Achamundu Achamundu.
In this interview, Prasanna talks to Shobha Warrier about Nanayam.
How different is Nanayam going to be from Achamundu Achamundu?
Achamundu followed a different style of filmmaking, which was not seen in Tamil before. Nanayam is different but it has its own commercial elements like songs and fights. There is no comedy track but the dialogues will make the audience laugh.

Lakhs of Tamils of North Sri Lanka may not vote in the January 26 Presidential election partly on account of the lack of the appropriate identity card or partly on account of a lack of interest in the election, given the trauma they had gone through during the war, and as refugees in camps ringed by barbed wire.Official estimates of the number of Tamil refugees who had registered to vote by filling the appropriate form, vary between 5,000 and 10,000. This is a minuscule part of the total refugee voting population of 200,000.“We have distributed application forms to the refugees in the camps and have instructed the local authorities to distribute them among the refugees not resident in the camps. But so far, only about 10,000 have filled in the form,” said Mrs.P.S.M.Charles ,Government Agent of Vavuniya district, which has the largest number of camp refugees.“
All we can do is to distribute the forms. We cannot force them to fill them in,” she told Express on Sunday. The Sunday Times reported that local officials in the North were moving in the matter slowly, though the Commissioner of Elections had said that temporary ID cards must be issued by December 24.The work in Sinhalese-dominated south Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has been going on at a very fast pace. In order to speed up the process, the government had ordered the Agriculture Deparment officials to issue 1.5 million temporary cards, though as per law only the Grama Niladharis could do it. The new proceedure has been objected to by the opposition camp led by Gen.Sarath Fonseka. The reason behind the slow pace in the Tamil-speaking North and the fast pace in the Sinhalese-speaking south seems to be that the government is not sure of getting the votes of the Northern Tamils and the war refugees,
while it has a sporting chance in the Sinhalese south.Reports from the North say that the Tamils there are not interested in the elections, since both Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gen.Sarath Fonseka are identified as hard core Sinhalese nationalists. However, of the two, Fonseka is seen in a slightly more favourable light because he is backed by the peacenik United National Party leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe.“The voting percentage in Jaffna district may not exceed 13 per cent this time,” said a Jaffna-based scribe. In the last election in November 2005, it was 1.2 percent because the LTTE had urged a boycott. However, the Rajapaksa and the Fonseka camps are making efforts to woo the Tamils. While Fonseka says that he will devolve power beyond what is contained in the 13 th.amendment, and has said that the Rajapaksa government had ordered the killing three top LTTE leaders who were going to surrender, the Rajapaksa government has said that all restrictions on the movement between the Tamil north and the Sinhalese south will be lifted forthwith.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is set to become the first state in the country to provide electricity for all Below Povery Line (BPL) families by January

2010, with just 1.18 lakh families remaining to be covered of a total of 5.24 lakh, according to a top state electricity board official.
"We set ourselves a target of providing electricity to all BPL families by December 2009.But it got delayed and we intend to achieve the target by January 2010", Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Chairman C P Singh said at a function here last night.
He said 4.06 lakh families of 5.24 lakh in BPL category had been covered and the others would be covered by next month. "With this,Tamil Nadu will be the first to provide electricity to all BPL families", he said at an interactive meet with Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association last night.
Claiming that Tamil Nadu has the lowest power tariff, he said load shedding in the state was expected to remain till the last quarter of 2010.
"By that time, TNEB will be able to withdraw power cuts as most powerplants are expected to be operational. If that happens, there will be an additional 1000 MW. There is also a possibility of Kudankulam Power plant being operational."
Singh said the power situation in Tamil Nadu was better than other states. "While the demand-supply gap is 25-30 per cent in other states, it is 15-20 per cent in Tamil Nadu."
He said the government's roll out of "Open Access" system has not received the expected response."If you are willing to use the system,we may relax power cut in industrial units", he told Association members.

According to 25-year-old Vany Kumar, who was locked up in a refugee camp for four months, along with many who escaped the horrors of the civil war, not only military guards traded sex for food with Tamil women but prisoners were also being made to kneel for hours in the sun, the Observer reported.
“It was a concentration camp, where people were not even allowed to talk... Girls came to wait for their relatives and military officers would come and touch them, and that’s something I saw. The girls usually didn’t talk back to them, as they knew that in the camp if they talked anything could happen to them... It was quite open, everyone could see the military officers touching the girls”, she said.
Kumar, from Essex, was released from internment in September, but she has waited until now to reveal the full scale of her ordeal in the hope of avoiding reprisals against friends and family held with her. Labels: Tamil Nadu
Canadian authorities are considering tracking down known Tamil Tigers – some outside the country – to help them distinguish potential terrorists from genuine refugees among the 76 Tamil men who arrived in a boat off Vancouver Island in October.
The government is also considering seeking assistance from the Sri Lankan government as it attempts to delve into the backgrounds of these men who claim to be refugees fleeing postwar Sri Lanka.
The revelations were made at a detention hearing Monday for one of the Tamil migrants, who remains behind bars in a Vancouver-area detention centre. Government lawyer Ron Yamauchi was making the case to keep the man in custody for security reasons.
The Immigration and Refugee Board has so far sided with the government's position that these mysterious men must stay in custody because there is reasonable grounds to believe they might be inadmissible to Canada on security grounds. But the men can't be held in detention indefinitely. At some point, the government must seek to have them sent home or allow them to be released while their refugee claims proceed.
Some security experts have suggested that the migrant ship was filled with Tamil Tigers, the violent separatist group that waged a decades-long civil war with the Sri Lankan government, which ended in their defeat last spring.
But after more than a month of interviews and investigation, the government has not provided proof that the migrants were members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Yesterday, Mr. Yamauchi repeated the government's assertion that it suspects there were Tigers aboard the ship and noted that authorities here plan to consult both Tigers and Sri Lankan government officials in their bid to identify the men.
Mr. Yamauchi conceded the plans are “delicate” and fraught with “complexities.”
A lawyer for many of the Tamil boat people said enlisting the help of Tamil Tigers to identify the men is tricky because he doubted the reliability of Tiger informants.
Lawyer Lorne Waldman also dismissed the notion of asking the Sri Lankan government for help.
A Sri Lankan diplomat in Toronto has said he doesn't believe Tamils are threatened in Sri Lanka and they don't need refuge in Canada.
The government's proposed methods to identify the migrant men underscore the difficulty of determining if the men are terrorists on the run.
Those complexities were evident at a hearing Monday for another young Tamil seeking release. (The migrants can't be identified because of a publication ban.)
Mr. Yamauchi said the man was involved in fundraising for the Tigers in Sri Lanka. But he also noted that the man told him that his business organization in Sri Lanka forced all members to fundraise for the Tigers.
Earlier, Mr. Waldman urged the board to disregard the advice of a Singapore-based terrorism expert who claims that Tamil Tigers were aboard the ship that arrived off the Canadian coast on Oct. 17.
Mr. Waldman said Rohan Gunaratna, the government's chief adviser on the Tamil boat people, is biased against Tamils, too cozy with the Sri Lankan government and can't be trusted because he won't reveal his sources.
“Mr. Gunaratna is not an objective expert as he lacks both independence and impartiality,” Mr. Waldman told the IRB hearing via teleconference.
Mr. Gunaratna's credibility could have an impact on whether the migrant men, all of whom have made refugee bids to stay in Canada, will be released in the near future.
Among other things, Mr. Gunaratna has advised the Canadian government that the ship the migrants arrived on was a former Tiger gun-running ship, that at least two of the migrants are Tigers and that the LTTE planned to set up a new base of operations in Canada after its defeat in the civil war.
The migrants who arrived off Canada's West Coast last October are the first wave of those Tigers to move to Canada, Mr. Gunaratna has said.
The detention cases have been held up for weeks as lawyers for the migrants demanded to cross-examine Mr. Gunaratna. He was grilled at a hearing last month by lawyers for the migrants.
An immigration and refugee adjudicator will rule next Monday on how much weight she will give to Mr. Gunaratna's opinions.

Tamils have spoken overwhelmingly with their democratic voices for the voiceless
Tamil brethrens in Sri Lanka in polls which were conducted today coast to coast throughout Canada. Just shy of 50,000 Canadian Tamils took part in this historic, transparent, fair and democratic process, a election official has told TNS reporter. According to the official reuslts from Tamil Elections Canada published at their web site:
Total Voter turnout: 48, 583
99.82% YES And 0.18% NO

Media Coverage of the Election Results
More than 99 % people who have voted in the referendum polls in Canada gave the mandate today that they support the independent Tamil Nation and reaffirmed the Vaddukkoaddai Resolution of 1976, which was mandated by Tamils in the north and east of the island of Sri Lanka in the 1977 general election.
The Vaddukkoddai Resolution states, "I aspire for the formation of the independent and sovereign state of Tamil Eelam in the north and east territory of the island of Sri Lanka on the basis that the Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka make a distinct nation, have a traditional homeland and have the right to self-determination."

Voters were lining up at a polling station
Canadian media described the polls as ever independent nationwide referendum by a Canadian community across major Canadian cities.
ES&S, recognised as biggest International and North American election firm, managed and monitored the poll and the ballot choosing process.
Results were announced at a press conference held at the Delta Toronto East Hotel for 30 polling stations as results of Vancouver were awaited at 10:20 p.m. Toronto time.
Witnessing the referendum, Adam Giambrone, the chair of the Toronto Transport Commission and a Toronto City Councilor, said at the press conference that the figure speaks to an incredible democratic process and praised the voluntary efforts laid behind the success of the referendum.
"As a government official in the city of Toronto, I think that is incredibly important to recognise the importance of democratic process of the fact that close to 50 000 people from the country, many of them right here in Toronto, have got out, got informed, and stood with the elections when they went out and voted in the free and fair elections," he said. "That would give your community to stand up and speak for your issue knowing that they got the credibility of the entire community behind them."
Congratulating the 2,000 volunteers he said the thousands of voters who voted gave a credit to the community itself. It also reflected how the [Tamil] community in Toronto has been engaged in actually going out and voting as they have done earlier in Toronto provincial and federal elections.

Electronic Voting
The organizers, Coalition for Tamil Elections Canada opted for registration of voters with an idea this will be useful for future elections. Also it was a requisite for the company officiating the poll. But a leading Tamil media in Canada carried out a vicious campaign that this information could reach the Sri Lanka government and will affect any travel prospects of the voters to Sri Lanka.
Calculatedly nurtured campaign that Tamils don’t want independence, orchestrated Tamil politics and media working for the above agenda and Establishments of Eezham Tamils gone obsolete by not reading the pulse of the masses could be challenged only through such referenda of people, said a Canadian university student.
Looking too close at events, some of the Canadian media miss larger issues, responded another youth. They delve into discussing insignificant issues about personalities, proscribed organizations and marginal groups, but miss the revolution that is taking place with Tamils, he said.
The impressive turn out of voters amidst international campaign that Tamil Eelam is drowned in Mullivaaykkal has stunned the observers.
Results of the Referendum also published by the Coalition for Tamil Elections Canada has a website at

CHENNAI: The police on Wednesday detained the domestic maid, who allegedly decamped with more than 150 sovereigns of gold jewellery from her employee’s house in West Mambalam recently.Sources said Geetha and her husband Ramesh were picked up from their new house at Mettupalayam near Ashok Nagar. She had moved into the house, twoand- a-half km away from her old residence, three months ago.
The police spread their net for her after printing press owner Ramesh and his wife Lata filed a complaint on Monday, alleging that 152 sovereigns of gold jewellery, worth about Rs 16 lakh, were missing from their house.Their domestic help, Geetha, became the prime suspect as she absconded soon after the theft was detected. Efforts to contact her over her mobile phone also failed. The police probed into her cell phone records and questioned her close associates and traced her to her new house.“Geetha planned the entire robbery,” the sources said. “She removed the pieces of jewellery not in a single day but over a period of time. The couple discovered the theft only when she emptied the entire shelf.” During enquiry, the police learnt that the maid had been booked for a similar offence earlier. In 2003, Geetha was arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 6 lakh worth jewellery from a previous employer’s house, but was acquitted.“This is her modus operandi.
She joins as a maid, wins the trust of her employers and then decamps with the loot,” the sources said. The police have recovered 50 per cent of the stolen items. They are also investigating whether Geetha and her husband are the notorious scooter couple, who indulge in chain snatching in different parts of the city.

“Neither the
DMK nor the people of Tamil Nadu harbour the idea,” he told reporters after inspecting the construction works of the Anna Centenary Library in Kotturpuram.
On Saturday, PMK leader Ramadoss, an advocate of bifurcation of bigger States, including Tamil Nadu, argued that the newly formed States were witnessing
development.
Telangana issue
When asked whether the Centre had mishandled the Telangana issue, as the announcement for creation of a separate State had triggered violence, the Chief Minister said a belated announcement and a hasty decision should be avoided.
Water issue
He refused to respond when asked about AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s allegations in the election campaign that the
DMK government had failed to protect the interests of the State in Mullaperiyar dam issue and the Cauvery water dispute.
In a separate statement, he called upon the AIADMK and the CPI to think twice before launching an agitation against that Marine Fisheries (Regulation and Management) Bill, since the Bill would not be introduced in Parliament in the current session.
Recalling Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar’s reassurance to the fishermen that further decision on the Bill would be taken only after consulting coastal States, Mr.
Karunanidhi said that CPI State secretary Pandian might have announced a protest since the AIADMK had decided to hold a demonstration in Delhi.
The Chief Minister congratulated doctors of the Government General Hospital, who had successfully performed heart transplantation.
Impact of Downtown report

CHENNAI: Complaints regarding the by-election to Tiruchendur and Vandavasi constituencies are flooding the mobile phone as well as the landline of Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta, giving him sleepless nights for the past few days. Most of the calls are coming in late night, said the CEO at a press conference, here on Wednesday. When asked about the number of complaints he had received about the irregularities during the campaign for the by-election, the CEO said he could not maintain an account.“For instance, last night I got a call at 12 midnight about an attack on some volunteers of political parties in Tiruchendur. Immediately, the matter was referred to the DIG concerned and later I got the message that people belonging to both parties were detained in connection with the attack,’’ he said.Just a few days ago, the CEO got a call at 2 am about a raid at a hotel in Tiruchendur where some AIADMK leaders were staying and he had to enquire about the whole incident at that odd hour. When questioned about whether he was satisfied at the arrangements in both the constituencies’, he gave an indirect reply: “The desire for power is a common human weakness and this has to be achieved through fair means. But, for some political parties or candidates, the means are not that important as the end.’’ Recalling the adage of Mahatma Gandhi, “means are as important as the end’’, the CEO said that some political parties had unfortunately forgotten to follow this.

US-based pharmaceutical major Hospira has signed an agreement with Chennai-based Orchid Chemicals to acquire its antibiotic injectable facility based out of Chennai for nearly USD 400 million.
Confirming the news K Raghavendra Rao, Managing Director, Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals said the deal, involving transfer of 400 employees to Hospira, would help deleverage balance sheet significantly.
On the rational behind the move, he said that there was not enough upside left in the cephalosporin business. “We could see no additional revenue from the injectibles operations,” he
“The company will get cash once the deal formalities are completed,” he said, adding that of the USD 400 million, Rs 1,400 crore would be utilized for debt repayment and the remaining cash would be used for business development.
The deal, he said, was expected to be earnings per share (EPS) accretive by Rs 7-8 for FY11.
Further, he said, Hospira did not hold stake in the company domestically. “Para 4 FTFs still remain with us.”
Here is a verbatim transcript of an exclusive interview with K Raghavendra Rao on CNBC-TV18. Also watch the accompanying video.
Q: Walk us through with what this means by way of what gets diluted or hived off from your revenues? What do you think will get added back in this ten year long deal with Hospira?
A: This is a deal which will help Orchid in many ways. First of all we are continuing our relationship with Hospira and are strengthening it further by getting into long-term agreement with them to enable them to sell our injectable products in many more markets.
Hence, they will be doing the injectable dosage business. We will support them from the backend by supply agreement for the period of ten years.
Q: Your stock has reacted on the way down today. I can only imagine that the markets apprehension is to restore your balance sheet. You sold off the most exciting part of your business and kept largely the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) side. Is that a fair criticism of this deal that you have done that to protect your balance sheet? You have probably sacrificed the most rewarding and high potential part of your business.
A: We had to see the perspective. If you look at the three parts of the business that we have given to them, one is the cephalosporin injectables business which is in the mature phase. There are no exciting news cephalosporin antibiotics dosage that are going of patent in the next few years. So the cephalosporin and other products, which we have launched in the last three-four years, have come to a matured phase. Therefore, there is no great additional revenue or profits that can come from that.
By the time the deal is consummated, we would have encashed the complete exclusivity period that is given to us by the FDA by March 15. By March 31 this agreement is going to be converted into actual transaction. So post the exclusivity period the other competitors will come in so normal run rate is what is going to happen and not an exclusive position in that.
Two carbapenems where the dosage forms are the ones which are going to get sold by them. There are no new penems that are going to come in the next five years. Only after five years other penems patent expiry is happening. This is seven injectables that are being given to them in terms of dosage form sale and supported by the backend bulk supply. All the rest of the business including non-antibiotics and cephalosporin oral and all antibiotic oral business including dosage forms for the regulated market is with Orchid.
I do not think there is criticism of most exciting which is being hived off. Also the valuation we are getting is not only just for the debt leveraging but we are looking at current year operations on a run rate basis of USD 90 million of topline and USD 35 million of EBITDA. So it is more than four times sales and about 12-13 times EBITDA. I think it is a decent valuation.
Q: Since you have indicated that the main plan over here is to retire debt what is the current debt on books? Will all USD 400 million go towards repairing that? How does this change your interest outlook going forward?
A: Interest sharing of very close to Rs 200 crore will be there because of the amount that we will receive in a couple of months. We have a long term debt of Rs 1,200 crore. We have a working capital of about Rs 550 crore. That will become about half because we do not need that much working capital to run the business and USD 150 million of FCCB are due in 2012.
This is the total debt profile of the company. So post this transaction we will be left with no long term debt. FCCBs will be there for USD 150 million which are due in 2012. About Rs 250-300 crore of working capital will be left in the books. We will have enough cash in the company to look at new growth opportunities as we go forward.
Four years back Orchid did not have a single injectable formulation. We could create a value for part of our business for USD 400 million. With USD 400 million into the company, in the next four years, we can definitely create much more value with opportunities going forward.
Q: Does Hospira hold any stake in your company because Solarex has been selling and Hospira has been buying and could hold close to 5% stake in Orchid right now?
A: They do not hold any shares in the company. I do not know internationally whether they have any GDR and other things because domestic shares they do not hold and what Solarex is selling is independent of what anybody else is holding. Therefore, I do not think they are selling and these people are buying.
Q: What is the profitability and margin profile of the residual business after the injectables are going out because one gets the sense that what you have sold is inherently with a much higher marginal profitability profile than the API business that you have at this current point even with a sure revenues from Hospira?
A: There is a model that we have worked on them in terms of how the pricing will be done for the bulk assets, product mix and the quantities. Therefore, a combination of these is resorting the most part of the EBITDA. The current run rate USD 90 million of topline and USD 35-40 million of EBITDA which is going to be affected by transfer of these assets or this business to them. However, at the net profit level it will make a much better sense because of the interest saving as well as at the EDIDTA level will claw back most of it by adding products to this pipeline for which they have to buy exclusively from us for the next 10 years as well as increase the quantities. This is because they have their proprietary dosage delivery items in which these antibiotics go.
The ramp up of the business in different markets, products and quantities will help us claw back the most of the EBITDA that we will be loosing at the moment. The current run rate, just about USD 90 million topline and USD 35-40 milion of EBITDA, is part of this business that we have given to them.
Q: What will be the first cut in terms of EPS getting hived off first for FY10 and FY11?
A: In FY10 there is no impact because this transaction is closing in first or second half of March. In FY11 it will be EPS accretive because at the net profit level my estimate is around RS 7-8 EPS. This accretion should happen because even though we are loosing a little bit on EBITDA we are saving on interest as well as we will claw back EBITDA itself by doing more quantities and more products. So I think it will be Rs 7-8 accretive for FY11.Labels: Tamilnadu, Tamilnadu Government, Tamilnadu Places, Tamilnadu Wild Life
NEW DELHI — India cannot accept a global warming treaty that would stall its drive to lift millions out of poverty, Premier Manmohan Singh said as he left for the final phase of UN climate talks in Copenhagen.
Singh is among the world leaders descending on the Danish capital for the final two days of a summit blighted by bitter wrangling that could wreck efforts to draw up a sweeping pact to combat global warming.
Singh said he looked forward to "constructive deliberation" but stressed that the developed world needed to address the concerns of poorer nations over the impact of any proposed agreement on their economic growth.
"Climate change cannot be addressed by perpetuating the poverty of the developing countries," he said in a departure statement released by his office.
India went to the Danish capital with an offer to reduce its carbon intensity by 20 to 25 percent by 2020, compared to 2005 levels.
"We are willing to do more provided there are credible arrangements to provide both additional financial support as well as technological transfers from developed to developing countries," Singh said.
The fraught negotiations in Copenhagen received a shot in the arm Wednesday when wealthy nations pledged some 22 billion dollars to fund the fight against global warming.
India remains steadfastly opposed to binding emission cuts and has refused to adopt a peak year when its emissions would have to stop growing and start falling.
The presence of around 120 world leaders at the end of the summit, including US President Barack Obama, is meant to inject momentum into reaching a deal to stop climate change after the end of 2012, when obligations run out under the landmark Kyoto Protocol.
Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh, speaking to Indian media in Copenhagen on Wednesday, said the Kyoto Protocol was currently in "intensive care".
Developing countries have accused industrialised nations of trying to discard Kyoto because it puts the onus on rich countries to accept binding emission cuts.
"If we're going to start with the basic premise that the Kyoto Protocol is going to be abandoned, I think the negotiations are taking place in very bad faith," Ramesh said.
"The process has been very, very badly handled," he added.

Chennai District Chennai Tamil: சென்னை formerly known as Madras.ogg Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Chennai is the fourth most populous metropolitan area and the fifth most populous city in India. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, Chennai city had a population of 4.34 million in the 2001 census within its municipal corporation. The urban agglomeration of metropolitan Chennai has an estimated population over 8 million people.

The city was established in the 17th century by the British, who developed it into a major urban centre and naval base. By the 20th century, it had become an important administrative centre, as the capital of the Madras Presidency.
Chennai's economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. The city is India's second largest exporter of software, information technology and information-technology-enabled services . A major chunk of India's automobile manufacturing industry is based in and around the city. Chennai Zone contributes 39 per cent of the State’s GDP. Chennai accounts for 60 per cent of the country’s automotive exports and is referred to as the Detroit of South Asia.
Chennai hosts a large cultural event, the annual Madras Music Season, which includes performances by hundreds of artists. The city has a vibrant theatre scene and is an important centre for the Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form. The Tamil film industry, known as Kollywood, the second largest movie industry in India, is based in the city; the soundtracks of the movies dominate its music scene.
Names
The name Chennai is a shortened form of Chennapattinam, the name of the town that grew around Fort St. George, which was built by the British in 1640 CE. The town area is said to have been earlier a part of the empire of the Rajas of Chandragiri.[citation needed]
There are two versions about the origin of the name Chennai: according to one version, Chennapattinam was named after Damerla Chennappa Nayaka, a Vijayanagar chieftain, Padma Nayak Velama Raja of Kalahasthi and Vandavasi from whom the British acquired the town in 1639 CE. The first official use of the name Chennai is said to be in a sale deed, dated August 1639, to one Francis Day who was an agent for the British . According to the second account, Chennapattinam was named after the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple; the word chenni in Tamil means face, and the temple was regarded as the face of the city.
The city's former name, Madras, is derived from Madraspattinam, a fishing village north of Fort St. George. There is a little agreement among researchers about the exact origin of the name Madraspattinam. Some believe that the Portuguese, who arrived in the area in the 16th century, may have named the village Madre de Deus. Others believe that the village's name came from the once prominent Madeiros family of Portugese origin, which had consecrated the Madre de Deus Church in the Chennai locality, Santhome, in 1575.
Some time after the British gained possession of the area in the 17th century, the two towns, Madraspattinam and Chennapattinam, were merged. The British referred to the united town as Madraspattinam, while the locals preferred to call it Chennapattinam.[citation needed] The state government officially changed it to Chennai in 1996, at a time when many Indian cities were being renamed.
The size of Chennai city is set to expand manifold. It will enlarge from its present extent of 176 km2 to 800 km2 in a decision taken by the government of Tamil Nadu.

Vettaikaaran team to move into Australia
News from very reliable sources indicate that the unit of Vettaikaaran are planning to move to Australia and shot a few songs of the movie at exotic locations in Australia. The movie, which is nearing its Diwali deadline is expected to wrap up their shooting pretty soon. This news comes from from some of our recent reliable sources, although as ever, we cannot be held responsible if the news does not become true eventually.
The film (Vettaikaaran) has crossed its first hurdle successfully as the reports on the film's audio which released recently has been very positive. Fans have been constantly raving about the songs in many forums and have already started changing their ringtones and caller tones to the songs of Vettaikaaran. Our site has also seen an unusual increase in the number of uploads of Vettaikaaran ringtones (check our gallery) which indicates that the songs have caught on really well with the masses. We also hope that the movie satisfies the expectations of the fans, and that will be enough for the movie to become a blockbuster as the movie has been acquired by the most powerful Tamil media in the world, Sun Pictures and Network.

The project was announced in August 2008 with the title Vettaikkaaran taken from the 1964 Tamil film starring M. G. Ramachandran.

Finally, the news is out
straight from the shoulders of “Vettaikaran’ producers. It has been confirmed that
the film will hit screens on Dec 18. The film is produced by AVM Productions and is directed by debutant Babu Sivan.
Ever since, the project was undertaken by Sun Pictures, it had furthermore raised everyone’s expectations as this production house acquires rights overthe film that has good quality entertainment. Recently, there were buzzes that members of Sun Pictures had insisted Babu Sivan to reshoot certain sequences inthe film since perfection was missing.
Though the producers haven’t revealed anything about the re-shoot, they’ve advertised about the film’s release date this morning. Since, most of the educational institutions will have Christmas holidays, the producers seems to have predicted thatthe film will have a great opening.
Vettaikaran features Vijay as an auto driver while Anushka does the role of a medical college student. Censor Board officials have passed ‘U/A’ certificate to this film for extreme violence in the stunt sequences.

Vettaikaran star casts 'Vijay' & Anushka Shetty' in the lead roles. Vettaikaran is directed by Babu Sivan and produced by M.Balasubramaniam, B.Gurunath Meiyappan and music is scored by Vijay Antony.
Vettaikaran is the much awaited movie of Vijay in the year 2009. Vijay plays the role of an auto driver while the Arundhati fame 'Anushka' does the role of a medical college student.
Vijay playing the role of auto driver reminds us about the Superstar Rajinikanth playing an auto driver in the blockbuster movie 'Baasha' isnt it ? Let us hope that the Illayathalapathy' Vijay
also succeeds in his next vinture and the film lives upto the expectations of the audience.
Post production work of Vettaikaran has come to an end except fine tuning of few scenes, which Vijay has requested to reshoot.
Sun Pictures has acquired the rights of Vettaikaran from AVM Productions and the music is scored by Vijay Anthony for this movie.
Vettaikaran composition is full of energy and it is also said that the song 'Puli Urumbudhu' has become the favorite of Vijay`s fans.

Vettaikaran: Terrible disappointment for Vijay fans
Banner: AVM Productions, Sun Pictures
Producer: M. Balasubramaniam and B. Gurunath Meiyappan
Starring: Vijay, Anushka Shetty, Salim Ghouse, Sri Hari, Sri Nath
Director: Babu Sivan
Music Director: Vijay Anthony
Alas! It’s a big letdown not merely for Vijay buffs, but for the ardent fans of music director Vijay Antony. The music director had delivered astounding chartbusters, ‘Naaka Mukka’, ‘Aathicchudi’ and more. But, ‘Vettaikaran’ has no such commendable tracks that are not worth listening to more than a time. ‘Vettaikaran’ has 6 tracks with none of them worthy heeding to.
Puli Urumudhu
Vocal: Ananthu, Mahesh Vinayagam
Lyrics: Kabilan
Here’s something you’ve got to observe properly about chorus part brimmed with tongue-twisting tricks- Odu Odu (Run Run) that turns to be ‘Vottu Podu’ (Cast your votes). Looks like Vijay Antony had to spend most of his time for this line. Well, there’s nothing much to appreciate about rest of quotients in the song. Be it lyrics or instrumentations, nothing seems to be impressive.
Chinna Thamarai
Vocal: Krish, Suchitra
Lyrics: Vivega
Vijay Antony has attempted for a sassy rap with erotic feel. But nothing seems to be perfect with unapt playback singers. Instead of Krish, Vijay could’ve opted for Benny Dayal and someone else who would’ve rendered the best part. Interludes with rap lyrics are quite impressive.
Naan Adichaa…
Vocal: Shankar Mahadevan
Lyrics: Kabilan
Pakka masala-kuthu song well-tailored for Vijay! Of course, this is one perfect pick of the album. The opening lines happen to be much comical and later Vijay’s ideologies are witnessed. The fast-pumping beats are sure to rock across the dance floors and it’s a grand fiesta for ‘Ilayathalapathy’ fans. The final verses will have Vijay’s son appearing on the screens.
Karigaalan
Vocal: Surchth, Sangeetha Rajeshwaran
Lyrics: Kabilan
Both vocalisms and instrumentations aren’t much impressive and there are no chances for this song to make it big across the charts.
Chinna Thamarai
Vocal: Krish, Suchitra
Lyrics: Vivega
The second version carries nothing different from the previous one. The repeated number has some extra fill-ins included here and there.
Ucchimanda
Vocal: Krishna Iyer, Shoba Shekar, Charulathamani, Shakthi Shree
Lyrics: Annamalai
The fast-beat folk song doesn’t boast of anything special apart from fast running chords on electric acoustic guitars. Actor Vijay’s mother Shoba Shekar has crooned the song along with Krishna Iyer and Shakthi Shree. Maybe, Vijay’s dance over the screens may make this song look interesting.
Finally, ‘Vettaikaran’ hasn’t got best numbers on overall. Apart from ‘Naan Adiccha’, none of the other songs have been tuned commendably. On whole, it’s a great letdown from Vijay and Vijay Antony, who earlier dazzled with ‘Sukran’ (Vijay Antony’s debut score).
Final Verdict: unimpressive on all parts.

In the see-saw game for and against Telangana, ministers from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions appear to have reconciled themselves to the inevitability of the creation of a separate State. Their upbeat counterparts from Telangana have sent a letter to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi thanking her.The leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema met Chief Minister K Rosaiah late in the night on Sunday and told him that they would not carry out their resignation threat. The volte-face is reportedly on account of the Congress high command’s resolve to carve out Telangana, though not immediately. Meanwhile, 11 Ministers and 10 MPs from the Telangana region, after meeting at IT Minister K Venkata Reddy’s residence, conferred with Rosaiah for quite some time. Later, they said they were happy over the UPA’s decision on Telangana and called upon their Andhra and Rayalaseema counterparts not to stall the process of its formation.Former minister and MLA from Telangana region R Damodar Reddy said they had faith that Sonia would create a separate State even if passing a resolution in the Assembly became difficult. ‘‘Even by passing a legislation in Parliament, she will ensure a separate State for us,’’ he said.Nonetheless, the agitation against birfucation of the state continued in Andhra and Rayalaseema. The political heat also rose after Vijayawada MP L Rajagopal’s statement in Delhi that he would arrive here on Monday to intensify the anti-Telangana stir. However, the signs are clear that the agitation by MLAs from Andhra and Rayalseema is on the decline. Former Minister and MLA J C Diwakar Reddy said all the MLAs supported Rosaiah’s government and felt there would be no Constitutional crisis and no President’s rule in Andhra Pradesh.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today cautioned against linguistic chauvinism and said one language cannot dominate another."Linguistic differences should not come in the way of harmony and brotherhood," the DMK chief said after distributing state government Film Awards for 2007 and 2008 here.Stating that language was merely a tool for mutual understanding and communication, he said some attach even divinity to it. "One language cannot dominate another," he said."Tamil is not opposed to any language and so should no language be opposed to Tamil," Karunanidhi, known for his mastery of Tamil, and writing and oratorial skills in the language, said.Earlier, the CM gave and received awards and termed such functions involving film fraternity as "medicine" to his tire and ill-health.Tamil cinema icons Rajnikant and Kamal Hassan received the Best Actor Award for 2007 and 2008 for 'Sivaji-The Boss' and 'Dasavatharam, respectively. The super stars along with some other award-winners presented the Best Dialogue Writer award to Karunanidhi for 'Uliyin Osai.'Saying that his passion for arts had been there in him since childhood, the octogenarian said this was the driving force behind writing scripts for films still.Labels: Chief Minister, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi, DMK, DMK Minister M.Karunanidhi, Doctor M.Karunanidhi, Kalaingar, Kalaingar M.Karunanidhi, M.Karunanidhi DMK
"Yeh madhumakhi ka chatha hai, chedho ge toh pashtaoh ge". RJD supremo Laloo Yadav's remark over the creation of Jharkhand in 2000 has come to haunt India as never before. Thanks to the UPA Government's knee-jerk `statehood-at-midnight" drama on carving out Telangana from Andhra Pradesh. Reminding one of the famous adage: We learn nothing from history except that we learn nothing from history!
Undoubtedly, 11 days of fasting seems to have done what 8 years of bargaining could not achieve for Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief K Chandrasekhar Rao: the assurance of a separate State of Telangana from a reluctant Centre. Triggering of the mass resignation of over 130 MLAs in a 292 Assembly and 32 MPs across party lines. What to speak of violence in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra.
Undoubtedly, fear that Naxalites would capitalise on the pro-Statehood movement given their strong presence in Telangana region along-with the growing evidence that leaders opposed to 'weak' CM Rosaiah were fishing in the troubled Telangana waters, were the principal triggers. The decision was also facilitated that it was time to cede the demand, hanging fire for 55 years, post its endorsement in the Common Minimum Programme in 2004. No matter that the late CM strongman Rajashekhar Reddy steamrolled the Telangana region on an anti-Telangana plank in the simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha polls last May.
Further, as a senior leader admitted, it was felt that Telangana with 17 Lok Sabha and 119 Assembly seats, could play out to be a strong Party turf vis-a-vis Chandrababu Naidu's TDP. The icing on the cake was KCR's assurance to merge with Congress post-Statehood. Bluntly, a virtue was made out of a necessity. Only to hastily backtrack, push the pause button with mud on its face.
True, the Centre may have been put the issue in the thanda baaksa but it has exposed that the bigness and smallness of a State has little to do with national interest but everything to do with crass opportunism, massaging its vote-banks and improving the Congress's winability quotient. In the hope that the smaller units will fetch the Party big political dividends. Camouflaged as imperative for "political stability" in the country (read Party), it has mooted the idea of setting up another States Reorganisation Commission ((last suggested in July 2007) to explore the formation of new States. No matter that till its electoral rout in UP in May 2006, the Party had opposed tooth and nail the creation of small States. It even let the Telengana Rashtriya Samiti quit the UPA alliance.
Recall, the UPA had set-up a sub-committee under Pranab Mukherjee (who else?) but as it had failed to reach a consensus, the decision was left to the Congress High Command, read Sonia. It remains to be seen whether the Congress-led UPA Government will come out smelling of roses or reek of rotten eggs this time round.
Adding to Centre's headache KCR's 'fasting success'' has once again opened the Pandora's Box for a renewed demand for 10 separate States. BSP's Mayawati favours bifurcation of UP --- Harit Pradesh out of Western UP and Bundelkhand out of south-eastern UP. Leaders in Maharashtra have raised the ante Vidarbha.
The BJP Darjeeling MP has raised the flag for Gorkhaland in West Bengal. Which the CPM's opposes. Then there is a demand for Saurashtra in Gujarat, of Coorg in Karnataka, Gondwana from portions of Chhattisgarh, Andhra and Madhya Pradesh, Kodagu from Karnataka's coffee belt, Bodoland from Assam, Ladakh and Jammu from Kashmir, Garoland from Meghalaya, Mithilanchal from North Bihar and Gorkhaland.
As for the Made in India regional leaders the less said the better. They are prone to blowing hot and cold depending on what suits them politically at the moment. Playing on the emotions of the poor and backward regions and sub-regions aspiring to be full-fledged States. Be it the TDP, RJD, Samajwadi, DMK et al. Remember Naidu was gung-ho on Telangana during the agitation only to eat his words once the issue snowballed on him.
Nobody can deny that a few States in India are much too large and unwieldy for efficient governance. It takes nearly two days to get from one end of UP to the other by road! Obviously, administrative efficiency is the first casualty. As the2000 experience of Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and, earlier, of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, shows, smaller States are able to meet better the rising expectations of their people for speedy development and a responsive and effective administration. Today, all are shining examples of "small is beautiful."
Logically, if one district of Assam could be made into a full-fledged State of Nagaland, another into Mizoram, a third into Meghalaya and yet another into Arunachal Pradesh, how can one hold back on Telengana or Vidarbha?
However, protagonists of bigger States disagree, often sharply. What guarantee, they ask, is there that this will end internal fissures. Make the rivers flow smoothly from one State to another. Merely look at the ugly riparian fight between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu and Punjab and Haryana. Or that Goa has had 16 Chief Ministers in 22 years, that a Government lasted only 10 days in Meghalaya last year.
What warranty that it would decrease the ever-rising disparities between the haves and the have-nots which are all the more glaring and difficult to camouflage in small states. Clinching their arguments by asserting that with caste and creed dictating the polity's agenda presently, any fresh redrawing of India's political map would only give monstrous fillip to separatism.
Take the case of Jharkhand. That state, carved out of southern Bihar in 2000, demonstrates that small isn't always beautiful. See how Koda milked the State of over Rs 4000 crores. Clearly, hiving off new States should not come to mean a panacea to development, resource allocation and governance.
Besides, it may make sound political sense but lousy economics. When the Prime Minister goes blue in the face talking of cutting back on costs and austerity drive, we continue to multiply our expenses. Authoritative sources aver that the creation of a State would cost the national exchequer over Rs 1,200 crore. Entailing expenditure on setting up a new State capital, Assembly and Secretariat but excluding the annual recurring expenses.
In addition, it could well encourage fissiparous tendencies, ultimately leading to India's balkanization and stoke the sub-terranean smouldering fires of disputes over borders--- and cities. Both Haryana and Punjab still claim Chandigarh. Orissa demands the return of Saraikala and Kharsuan. Nagaland still wants to cut into large chunks of Manipur and certain forest areas of Assam to create Nagalim. Bihar yearns desperately for the mineral-rich districts of Jharkhand.
Will not a further partition of the existing States result in an India that would fit Jinnah's classical description of Pakistan as being "truncated and moth-eaten"? The only purpose it will serve will be to whet regional and separatist appetites, as it happened at the time of the first SRC in the mid-fifties. The very "black hole" that our past leaders were ever eager to avoid.
The tragic irony of history is that successive Prime Ministers bought peace at the cost of strong integrated India by carving out new jagirs for acquiring "new chelas" and assured vote banks. Unfortunately for the Centre, its policy of going populist time and again and opting for quick-fix remedies has boomeranged. Our netas have to realize that statesmanship and sagacity lie in adopting the middle path.
In the ultimate , the UPA Government needs to learn from the mistakes of the recently carved small States, diagnose the disease afresh and hammer out solutions for better governance. Instead of buying time and win votes. Much can be achieved through meaningful decentralization of administration in these days of computerization, without adding to the cost of governance through top-heavy ministerial baggage.
Let us not allow politicians of all hues to create new pocket boroughs motivated by petty personal interests, undermining national unity. Are we now going to roll back history to pre-Independence days and create 562 States? Time to bolt the barn door on this. Politics willing.

The Telangana upheaval has given the Pattali Makkal Katchi in Tamil Nadu a fresh reason to reiterate its demand for the bifurcation of the state. Now was the time to “take up the matter again, as nobody would be able to oppose it,” said party founder-leader S Ramadoss on Saturday. “When I suggested the idea nearly ten years ago, various parties criticised me,” he told a press meet here, and took a dig at the “new fighters” who demanded the division of the state into north and south.“Small is beautiful. The smaller states are doing very well,’’ he added. Dr Ramadoss urged the Centre to convene an all-party meeting to discuss similar bifurcation demands from the states, urging the government to be bold and prompt in its decisions.

Following the Union Government announcement of the formation of the Telengana state, the demand to bifurcate Tamil Nadu into north and south for “better administrative purposes’’ gained momentum. The leaders of the Federation of North Tamil Nadu and Southern state - A K Natarajan and N Sethuraman - demanded bifurcation along the Cauvery River into North (with Chennai as capital) and South (with Madurai as captial), here on Thursday.Sethuraman said that the demands for development of the southern districts are often ignored. “Most industries are concentrated in and around Chennai. The 18 southern districts are drought-prone and the people are poverty-stricken. The government has never looked into their problems seriously,’’ he said, adding that a campaign would be launched to create awareness about the demand. Functioning of nationalised banks in Tamil Nadu was crippled following a day-long strike called by various bank unions to condemn the government's proposed merger move and consolidation of public sector banks.
The day-long strike call was given by the major unions, including the All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA) and the All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA).
About 4.5 lakh bank employees of the public sector and some private sector banks across the country were on a strike.
The bank employees also staged a demonstration denouncing the Centre's move to merge the banks.

Rajnikanth, the style icon and one of the most influential and bankable movie stars in Indian cinema, who is regarded as ‘demigod’ in South India, turns 59. He has acted in some 200 movies in nine languages. His mass popularity and appeal is largely drawn from his mannerisms and stylized delivery of dialogue.
Rajnikanth was born as Shivajirao Gaekwad in a Maratha family in Karnataka in 1950. He did his schooling at the Acharya Pathshala in Bangalore and then at the Vivekananda Balak Sangh, a unit of the Ramakrishna Mission. In his initial days, he struggled to fight poverty.
He began his career doing various jobs in Bangalore. He also attended a theatre for stage plays. Before starting his career in the film industry, he worked as a bus conductor for the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation in Bangalore. It was during this time that he nurtured his acting interests by performing in various stage plays. Powered by a strong desire to become an actor, Rajnikanth went to Madras, the tinsel town of Tamil Cinema.
He was helped by a friend to join the Madras Film institute and completed his acting course in 1974. Popularly referred to and credited in films as superstar and fondly called as “thalaivar” (meaning leader in Tamil), Rajnikanth debuted in Tamil films in 1975. RajiniKanth - The legend with Rational, Assertive, Jubilant, Intelligent, Nice, Independent, Kind, Articulate, Nationalistic, Thoughtful and Humorous Qualities.
Rational: His way of leading his life has always had a rationalistic approach. His rational approach towards spirituality has always shown that normal life and spiritual life are different. His mode of adoption in spirituality was a streamlined adoption. First it was Raghavendra Swami who lived as a man, saw god and then at later point became god. Next it was with Lord shiva[ Annamalai, Jambukeshwara,Natraja etc] and the final point was with Himalaya saints in Himalayas. Slowly getting the feel of Himalayas he adopted Mahaavatar Babaji’s preachings and reaching its maximum point in the art of meditation and yoga.
Assertive & Articulate: He always had assertive approach in his acting life and as well as his personal life. When the stage was set for him in 1996 elections with people and politicians were ready to go behind him, He was assertive enough to say that I am not willing to join politics now. He did not succumb to any external pressure. He assertively said in which ever field you go you must know its pros and Cons. He also told I will definitely learn, experience and investigate this political field before getting into it. This shows his assertive charisma in anything he does. The second thing is articulation. This skill can be depicted in many numbers of his movies. The dialogue delivery with its rising and falling intonation shows his articulation power. This articulation power has led him to have massive fan following in and around the world.
Jubilant & Humorous: He has always has been victorious in any role has played. He is the only actor who enjoys 97% success rate in the Tamil cinema. He like his contemporizes namely like Amitabh, Chiranjeevi Kamal etc had the comedy factor behind their character role portrayal. The movies like Veera, Dharmadurai etc has shown the humorous side of Rajini. Even behind the screens lot of people has spoken in volumes about the humorous character of Rajini.
Nice & Kind: He has always been nice and kind to his family, Film artists and to the common people. He always has the helping attitude to the poor and needy. Even in film industries his friends or any other actors who has suffered with any loss he has done some character freely for them in their next movie without accepting any money. He has always been nice to his teacher K. Balachander the legendary director and to people like Muthuraman who gave Rajini the real shape in Cinema when Rajini was at this start of his career. He was always known for his down to earth personality.
Intelligent & Independent: Rajini was always intelligent in knowing his strength and weakness. He has always had SWOT[Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats] analysis before under taking any cinema or any new responsibility. This Quality has made him to sustain him in the Film industry for almost thirty five years. By knowing his strengths and portraying the role depending upon his strength he was easily able to capture the minds of people in millions. He was always independent in adapting to any kind of acting role. He has his own style of portraying roles which made him a trend setter in the Tamil film Industry. This Quality has always shown him a class apart.
Nationalistic & Thought ful: He had national approach in many issues. He was the first one who came forward to donate for the interlinking of rivers. This showed his nationalistic approach. He did not want the common people to suffer. He was creative in many ways. His idea in any issue has always been welcomed by majority rather than being prone to criticism. The best example here one could be given with clear cut proof is, his thought provoking speech during the Lankan issue and fasting in 2002 at the protest for the release of Cauvery water.
Besides this he has been a role model, motivator and guiding force for many youths, common man and even to the women folk during their tough and normal times in life. He has played key role in shaping up the lives of many people. His message to his fans and to the common public was do your duty, see your family, grow yourself and establish yourself very much strong in the society. His ability of accepting the mistakes has been a contributing factor in his growth. This quality made him to sustain for 35 long years[More years to come] and it also provided him a new learning Opportunity in what ever role he has under taken. He always believed learning is a continuous process and hence it made him not to stagnate in the rat race of the Indian cinema. He has always told his fans to make a name for them selves so that they will be respected in the society very well. As a people of all and sycophant or deep rooted fan of him let us all wish the legendary Super star Happy Birthday[60], more movies of him, healthy and long life.

1.The Spring
Superstar Rajinikanth could not have given his fans a bigger surprise on his 60th birthday. Instead of stepping into politics, the icon of Kollywood has made a re-entry of sorts in the hospitality industry.
A group of entrepreneurs from Chennai have taken on lease the Arunachala Inn — a property owned by the actor at the Kodambakkam High Road and transformed it into a swanky designer hotel called The Spring.
The highlight of the hotel is its cinematic ode to Rajinikanth — replete with a themed coffee shop and co-ordinated uniforms aimed at evoking a sense of nostalgia — courtesy brand Rajini.
R Anand Krishnan, one of the directors of the luxury hotel and the son of Mr Ravi (of the Vasantha Bhavan group) affirms that the hotel was designed around what the actor’s fans love.
Elaborating on the Rajini-centric design that went into the creation of many parts of the hotel, he says, “The coffee shop Caffeine would be a treat for Rajini fans as the walls here are lined with 24 hand-painted black and white portraits of the superstar created by the artist Santhanam.”
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Sticking to the mantra popularised by Rajini’s punch dialogues like Yen vazhi, thani Vazhi (‘my way is a unique way’), Anand adds, “The icing on the cake is that the waiters, in true Rajini style from his Annamalai days, are dressed in a black shirt and pants combo, replete with a silver-satin band tied around their waists. It’s what we call the total Rajini experience.
In fact, the Chennai based designer Satkrit Krishna, a self-confessed hardcore Rajini fan was roped in to design the uniforms for the coffee shop. Talking about his inspiration and his role model, Satkrit says, “I personally have been a fan of the superstar since my childhood days and it was one of the things that drew me to this project. My reference points were the films Muthu and Annamalai, in both of which he sports a thundu, tied around his waist. We gave it a chic makeover with a satin sash (in this case a waistband) to complete the attire.”
2.What's Today's Thalaivar's Plan ?

Rajinikanth’s 60th birthday on Saturday may see him locked up in the new Mahavatar Babaji Ash-ram that he has built near Chengalpattu, 60 km from here. But his family and fans have organised shashtiabdapoorthi pujas such as ayush homam for long life at the Tirukkadaiyur temple in Nagapattinam district, fam-ous for celebrating one’s 60th birthday. Fans are welcoming him once again to enter politics through colo-urful posters across the state.
Rajinikanth was at his Poes Garden residence on the eve of his 60th birthday and met one of his fans, Kundrathur Raju, who has brought out a book on him. While he is expected to be at home on Saturday, his office in Kodambakkam is already sending out news that he will be in meditation on his birthday.
“Madam Latha Rajini-kanth has invited important office-bearers of fan clubs to their Poes Garden residence on Saturday. We hope that the superstar will be home tomorrow to give us an audience,” said Rajini Palani, an important office-bearer of the city-based Rajini fan club.
Posters pasted by his fan clubs across the state depict Rajinikanth as the future chief minister of TN. Many advertisements in Tamil eveningers urged the actor to take the plunge into politics and say goodbye to cinema after Endhiran.
Rajinikanth has been reportedly visiting Mahavatar Babaji Ashram he has built on a hill near Chengalpattu at least once a month for the last six months. The ashram with a garden has a dhyana mantap especially built for him. Office-bearers of his fan clubs have started visiting the ashram.
His fans have organised special prayers in places of worships across the state and annadhanams will be organised in orphanages and homes for mentally challenged and the destitute on his birthday.
3.Thalaivar Watched 'Paa'
Tamil Super Star Rajinikanth, who is all set to celebrate his 60th birthday on Saturday, watched director Balki’s much-acclaimed Bollywood film Paa on Wednesday evening along with his wife Lata and two daughters Aishwarya and Soundarya in a special screening at Four Frames preview theatre in Chennai.
After the show, the superstar said: "I have always been a great fan of Amitji. I have had the honour of working with him and watching his work down the years, but what he has done in this film is unbelievable." Notably, Rajinikanth has worked with Amitabh in many Hindi films during the 80's, including Andhaa Kanoon, Giraftaar and Hum.
"I have seen many great performances by both Indian and Hollywood actors, but I have never seen anything like this. Amitji is the greatest. I don't think anyone else would be able to play the role he has played in Paa," Rajinikanth praised Amitabh's performance in Paa.
"My admiration for Amitji has grown thousand times more for Amitji and I know my praising his performance means nothing when the whole country is only talking about his performance," said thalaivar

Superstar Rajinikanth turns 60 today (December 12). We at sify.com wish him all the best. So what’s the superstar doing on his birthday?
The star who normally escapes from the fanfare and hysteria whipped up by his fans in Chennai, to unknown Himalayan destinations for solitude and introspection is this time very much at home.
As usual he is avoiding the media and fan frenzy and keeping a low profile. The buzz is that he will be locked up at his new Mahavatar Babaji Ashram that he has built near Chengalpet and celebrating the birthday in total solitude.
His family and close friends have organized a Shashitabadapoorthi puja (60th birthday celebrations) at the famous Tirukkadiyur temple near Tiruchi.
Individual fans and artist who are close to him like Lawrence and director SP Muthuraman are conducting their own “feeding the poor” programmes at Choolaimedu.
Earlier on Friday, Rajinikanth launched a book written by one of his fans Kundrathur Raju, at his Poes Garden residence.
As the Boss steps into his 60th year he is still the ‘numero uno’ star of Kollywood. 2010 will be a significant year as his Endhiran- The Robot is set to release.

It is official; Rajini will not be in town on his 60th birthday. A huge dampener for the fans no doubt, but that is the way it is going to be. After all, the thorough professional that he is, Rajini wouldn’t mess up the shooting schedules of Endhiran, whatever may be the occasion. So, he will be on the sets of Endhiran in Pune while his fans celebrate the big day in trademark style, which will involve welfare activities like blood donation camps and civic activities like planting of trees, cleaning of roads and many other such services.
While it will be business as usual on the sets of Endhiran, the unit will definitely find time to celebrate the big occasion in the presence of the man himself. Behindwoods also joins his innumerable fans and well wishers in wishing the Superstar a very happy birthday.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Just a few months ago, Sri Lanka's president and its army chief were strong allies, working closely together to defeat the Tamil Tiger rebels and end the nation's 25-year civil war.
Now the two men hailed as national heroes are bitter political opponents, as Gen. Sarath Fonseka works to unseat President Mahinda Rajapaksa in next month's presidential elections.
Rajapaksa's allies brand Fonseka a potential dictator and say he is ungrateful to the man who promoted him to army chief and put him in charge of leading the fight against the rebels.
Fonseka, who resigned from the military last month, accuses Rajapaksa of corruption and nepotism and says the nation is still not at peace, even though the war ended in May.
"Under cover of war victory, if someone is trying to boost up his family image or to stick to nepotism ... then you can't say peace has come," Fonseka told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday.
Fonseka was highlighting the position of Rajapaksa's three brothers: one a Cabinet minister, another the president's top adviser and a third the defense secretary.
Fonseka said if elected he would prune down the extensive powers of the presidency and strengthen parliament under the prime minister.
But many Rajapaksa backers argue Fonseka is actually planning on taking more power, and might even turn the country into a dictatorship.
Fonseka brushed off the accusation.
"If I was keen about a military regime, I would have done it long ago, even before the war was won," he said. "I am a disciplined general who commanded a disciplined army."
The falling out between Rajapaksa and Fonseka is stark. After the war, the president promoted the army chief, giving him a fourth star and naming him commander of all military forces.
But Fonseka complained he was sidelined into a bureaucratic job and under constant accusation of plotting a coup. He resigned last month and announced he would run as the opposition candidate in Jan. 26 elections.
Victor Ivan, a political analyst and editor of Ravaya newspaper, said Fonseka's decision has made the election — which had been considered an easy win for the president — a real contest and was healthy for democracy in the country. But also he warned of a close race sparking street violence.
The government and the military came under harsh criticism for their conduct during the final months of the war, when 300,000 ethnic Tamil civilians were trapped along with Tamil separatists in a shrinking war zone in the north.
According to the U.N., more than 7,000 civilians were killed from January to April, and a U.S. State Department report listed instances when government troops allegedly fired at civilians and hospitals and killed rebels who tried to surrender with white flags. Journalists critical of the military campaign were killed, attacked or forced to flee the country.
Fonseka implied gangs working for government leaders may have been involved in the attacks on journalists and denied war crimes allegations.
"As far as the army is concerned, I don't know there were any war crimes. I monitored every action by the troops," he said. "If we went on ignoring the safety of civilians, out of the 300,000 civilians we saved, half would have gotten killed."
But Fonseka's entry to politics has alarmed the mainly Hindu minority Tamil group, who view him as an ethnic Sinhalese nationalist.
His reported comments last year that he was fighting for a Buddhist, Sinhalese state reinforced that fear. Fonseka says he was misquoted and that he stands for equality and justice for all.
"In my previous job I did justice to them (Tamils). I destroyed terrorism and liberated the affected people," Fonseka said, adding as president he would ensure "equal rights and justice done to all communities in the country."
But he was non-committal on the long-standing Tamil demand for power sharing, saying only a future parliament could decide the issue.

In a spell befitting a champion spinner, 16-year-old Aushik Srinivas rattled Mumbai with his probing length and persistence and denied the hosts the crucial first-innings lead. Mumbai started the final day needing a further 193 runs to overtake Tamil Nadu's imposing first-innings 501 with seven wickets in hand, including the overnight centurion Wasim Jaffer. However, Srinivas squashed their hopes in the very first hour of the morning with a mesmerising spell of left-arm spin and returned figures of 8.1-4-11-6.
From 314 for 4, Mumbai lost their way drastically. The next six wickets fell for the addition of just 44 runs, the last four wickets going down with the score stuck at 358. Mumbai lost Omkar Khanwilkar, Jaffer's overnight partner, quickly as the left-hander failed misread the line of a straighter delivery from C Ganpathy and was rapped on the pads and declared plumb in front.
The responsibility was solely Jaffer's now, in the absence of any support at the other end. Even if Abhishek Nayar had joined him, his present form probably might not have given confidence to his captain. Nayar has successfully used the long handle in crunch situations in the past, but this season barring a half-century in the first game against Punjab, he has been struggling. He had just 73 runs in four games before this match.
Meanwhile Tamil Nadu, led by Srinivas, were steadily loosening Mumbai's grip, built by Jaffer-Ajinkya Rahane combine yesterday. Runs slowed down and Jaffer was slightly desperate. In this scattered frame of mind he tried reverse0sweeping a delivery that pitched on middle stump and held its line, but missed the line and the ball hit his bent knee. Srinivas appealed fervently, in unison with the entire Tamil Nadu team, but their plea was turned down. Two balls later Jaffer attempted the same shot against a similar delivery with the only difference being the change in pace. This time the top edge flew wide and to the right of first slip where Murali Vijay plucked a super catch with his right hand.
Understandably Srinivas and Tamil Nadu celebrated rapturously, because Jaffer was their chief nemesis. Credit should go to the prodigious tweaker, born in Coimbatore, who thankfully was advised by one of the coaches at a talent camp to become a spinner instead of chasing ambitions of becoming a medium-pace bowler.
On Thursday Srinivas had gained the upper hand against Ajinky Rahane in an engrossing contest. Though Jaffer had used his rich experience to quell Srinivas' challenge, he knew he couldn't afford to take the youngster lightly. The best example to gauge the impact of Srinivas was to compare him to Iqbal Abdulla, Mumbai's second spinner, and a left-arm orthodox one at that. Never in either innings did Abdulla assert himself over the Tamil Nadu batting and even to a layman the reasons were clear: while Srinivas attacked with flight and varying pace, Abdulla mostly darted the ball at a fuller length.
Little wonder then that Mumbai's lower order and tail failed miserably against Srinivas. Nayar tried to defend on the front foot but ended up offering a simple return catch to Srinivas. Next ball Ramesh Powar lunged forward to pat the ball down but his outstretched back foot was raised allowing the proactive wicketkeeper U Sushil to knock off the bails. Though Srinivas missed out on a hat-trick he got lucky when Abdulla played casually into the hands of Ganpathy at silly mid-on. Dhawal Kulkarni tried to play with hard hands against a flighted delivery, which couldn't even cross Ganpathy. Usman Malvi then stepped out valiantly and was stumped. Mumbai's fall was quick and embarrassing, and it came at the little hands of Srinivas.
Vijay made it more painful for Mumbai by scoring a blistering 150, bringing up his century in the second session thereby enlivening the rest of the day. Having three points, Tamil Nadu have are assured themselves a quarter-finals berth while Mumbai, at 16 points, need to make sure they do not lose outright in their final league clash at home against Gujarat starting on December 15.

If you want to store aviyal for the next, just cool it under the fan , bring it to room temperature and then

A Siva temple located at an ancient Hindu site called Akaththiyar Thaapanam, at Kangku-veali in the Moothoor division of the Trincomalee district, where Hindus gather especially to perform the Aadi Amaavaasai ritual for ancestors, was destroyed without any traces coinciding the Heroes’ Day on 27 November. The location of the temple is under the control of Sri Lanka Army stationed at a nearby Sinhala village, Neelaappola. The Sinhala villagers of Neelaappola protected the Tamil villagers of Kangku-veali from displacement in 2006. The Tamil villagers who were shocked and wept to see the temple razed to the ground now, suspect ‘outsiders’ and are scared whether this is a prelude to wipe out their traditional village as well. Image of Murukan desecrated during the destruction a few days back. It was already a broken image when found in the ancient ruins and was fixed together

Moothoor (Mūtūr), spelt in a number of mutilated ways by the Sinhala and English media of the island, and copied by the international media, simply means ‘the ancient village’ in Tamil.
Kangkuveali is a large paddy field village in Moothoor. In old Tamil 'veali' itself stands for paddy field. (In Sinhala word formation 'wela' means paddy field.)
The Akaththiyar Thaapanam at Kangku-veali is a site mentioned in a local mythological literature called Karaisaip-puraa’nam.
Akaththiyar Thaapanam means ‘the structure or deity installed by sage Agastiya’ of mythological fame in South India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
Local Tamils traditionally gather at this place to perform the annual Hindu ritual of Aadi Amaavaasai (the new moon of the Tamil month July-August) for ancestors.
Decades ago, a small temple was constructed at the ritual site by bringing the ancient sculptures of Sivalingam, Pi'l'laiyaar and Murukan found in the adjacent ruins that still bear ancient pillars.
In 2006, when people of the traditional Tamil villages, Moothoor and Champoor were displaced, the famous ancient temple for Paththira-kaa’li at Champoor was destroyed.
Even during those precarious times the Tamil people of Kangku-veali didn’t evacuate. They in fact stayed with the people of the adjacent Sinhala village Neelaappola and were protected by them.
However, Tamils were not permitted by the SLA stationed at Neelaappola to perform Aadi Amaavaasai ritual this year.
In recent times local people witness outside Sinhalese visiting the locality for ‘tourism’ purposes, as the government has announced Tamil areas are now cleared for the Sinhalese to visit.
The Tamil villagers last saw the temple intact on 20th November. They first noticed the destruction on the 28th, suspect systematic State programme, and hence are afraid to complain about it to anyone.
A spontaneous development about Hinduism in the island nowadays is that in many rural areas people have started officiating rituals by themselves, as there are no Brahmin priests.
Those who witness the desecration of Hindu temples in recent times in Galle, Moothoor, Champoor and other places as well as prevention of Hindu festivals on many instances, wonder at the irony of Sinhala leaders like Mahinda Rajapaksa and Ranil Wikramasinghe regularly visiting Hindu temples in South India to perform Brahmanic rituals to fulfil their desires.
While
Tamils of Champoor find their Paththira-kaa’li temple destroyed, a strong belief currently circulating among the Sinhalese in the South is that Mahinda was able to win the war only because of the Malayala Kaddaadiyas (sorcerers from Kerala) hired by him to perform a dreaded ritual, ‘Kaa’li Bandhana’ (binding the worrier goddess Kaa’li), propitiating the Hindu deity for his victory.

The Sinhala word Kaddaadiyaa (Kaṭṭāṭiyā), meaning a sorcerer, enchanter, magician, devil priest, shaman priest or dancer itself is an old Tamil word, meaning a dancer under a spell (Kaddu-aadi; kaddu: spell; aadi: dancer).

xinhua, dec 10. The Sri Lankan government said Wednesday that it will speed the process of prosecuting or releasing former Tamil Tiger rebels now in the custody of the government.
Human Rights and Disaster Relief Services Minister Mahinda Samarasing he told reporters that though excessive caution was needed in dealing with the issue during the active conflict to safeguard national security, the post-conflict phase provides a more conducive environment to expedite due process.
The government said over 11,000 Tamil Tiger rebels, including 2,000 women, are being rehabilitated at 17 centers including three permanent detention facilities with the defeat of the rebel group in May this year.
Opposition parties continuously demanded the government to release them or prosecute them under the Sri Lankan law.

— die, selbst wenn ihnen göttlicher Nektar zuteil würde, diesen nicht im Gedanken an seine Süße allein verzehrten;
— die ohne Haß sind;
— die ohne Trägheit sind;
— die, wohl auch fürchtend, was andere fürchten, dennoch ihr Leben gäben, wenn es Ruhm zu erlangen gilt, die jedoch nicht zugriffen — und könnten sie auch die ganze Welt einnehmen — wenn es mit Schande verbunden wäre;
— die ohne Sorgen sind;

Was konnte ich tun?
"Geben Sie es her!
— so lautete jener Vers.(7)

In "Cintamani" erwähnt Naccinarkkiniyar Manimekalai an zwei Stellen(1).
— "Was soll ich machen? Die Sache ist mir nicht klar. Ich sehe es genau durch. Ich verstehe gar nichts", sagte ich. — "Ja, kann es denn ein Buch geben, das man nicht verstehen kann?" . — "In Tamil sind sie zum größten Teil so. Man kann sie verständlich machen. Dafür muß die rechte Zeit kommen." — "Was verstehen Sie denn in diesem nicht?"
Eineinhalb Jahre blieb Rangacariyar in Kumbakonam.
