Sri Lanka to prosecute or release former rebels

xinhua, dec 10. The Sri Lankan government said Wednesday that it will speed the process of prosecuting or releasing former Tamil Tiger rebels now in the custody of the government.

Human Rights and Disaster Relief Services Minister Mahinda Samarasing he told reporters that though excessive caution was needed in dealing with the issue during the active conflict to safeguard national security, the post-conflict phase provides a more conducive environment to expedite due process.

The government said over 11,000 Tamil Tiger rebels, including 2,000 women, are being rehabilitated at 17 centers including three permanent detention facilities with the defeat of the rebel group in May this year.

Opposition parties continuously demanded the government to release them or prosecute them under the Sri Lankan law. More... Discuss this story
