Our experiences with editing KOLAM
New Concept and Layout
Our experiences with editing KOLAM Vol. 1, made us decide to change a few things in the layout and in the general concept of KOLAM - these changes are valid for KOLAM Vol. 1, too.
The first volume will be revised accordingly in the near future.
Changes in the General Concept:
- KOLAM will appear uniformly with an English surface, i.e. the Frame, the Cover Page, the Imprint Page, the Editorial News, the Authors' Page and the Contents Pages of the individual volumes will be in English. - The articles themselves will be written in different languages, according to the author's choice.
- Tamil words will henceforth (and with a retrospective effect for vol. 1) be written using a scientific transliteration with diacritical marks (in IITS-font), in order to avoid too many inconsistencies.
- From KOLAM Vol. 2 onwards, articles in Tamil will be included, too (in MylaiSri-font).
- A number of larger translation projects will be included under the auspices of KOLAM, but will appear individually (i.e. without being included in the regular volumes). The first projects of this kind will be
- a German translation of U. Vª. C¤min¤taiyar's autobiography
- a German translation of KuÉuntokai along with the commentary
- KOLAM now appears with a left-side frame carrying "functional buttons", so as to achieve clearer presentation and easy handling.
- The background colours of the pages have been made uniform: henceforth, all the articles belonging to the same section (e.g. Classical Literature, Modern Literature, etc.) will appear with the same background colour.
- The sections in the "Table of Contents" of the individual volumes will be further differentiated by the introduction of new categories. Further subcategories will be added in the following volumes, where necessary.
- The layout and style for bibliographies and bibliographical references will be reviewed and determined in near future.

Here, we will soon provide a style-sheet for authors who want to publish in KOLAM and who would be able to HTML-edit their own papers.
Some first indications can already be given:
- Background-Colours (different for different sections):
- Editorial Pages: #FFDC79
- Classical Literature: #D3D3D3
- Modern Literature: #FDFAD7
- Indigenous Sciences: #E1E193
- History, Art, Architecture, Iconography, Archaeology: #C4DBC5
- Folklore, Culture, Sociology: #F7E0D9
- Miscellaneous: #B7EFFF
- Fonts and Sizes:
- The body of the text should be set in Times New Roman in 14 pts.
- Words carrying diacritical marks should be set in IITS (to be downloaded from our home-page)
- Any words which are set in italics - even if they do not carry diacritical marks - should be set in IITS.
- Tamil words and entire Tamil texts should be set in Mylai-Sri (to be downloaded from our home-page)
- Footnotes and their links:
- Footnote-numbers in the text should be set between brackets, e.g. (1), (2), …
- The Footnote numbers inside the text should carry the "bookmark" TXT1, TXT2, …
- Accordingly, the numbers of the Footnotes themselves should carry the "bookmark" FN1, FN2, …
- Hence, (1) in the text (only the number; do not extend the link on to the brackets!) should be linked to FN1; the footnote itself should be closed with the word "back" (always in the respective language of the article), set between brackets, viz. (back), and linked to TXT1, TXT2 etc., so that the cursor jumps back to the footnote-number in the text. - Please, write the bookmarks "TXT" and "FN" in capitals, but the word "back" in low-case letters.
Text:
(8) Sprüche 9, 10, 11, 12. - Die Bedeutungen der Sprüche 10 und 12 wurden offenbar nicht recht verstanden. - (zurück)
(15) Sprüche 37, 38, 39, 40. - (zurück)
Authors' Page : We request our authors to make available to us a passport-size photograph and a short abstract of their bio-data to be included into the Authors' Page. -
3. Script-Fonts (June 1998 - obsolete)
Since KOLAM now uses diacritical marks and Tamil script, wherever necessary, we request our readers, to download and install both the fonts made available from our home-page:
IITS (font with diacritical marks) /
Mylai-Sri (Tamil font) /
Moreover, we request our future authors to use these fonts in their articles, according to the indications given in our style-sheet. - ![]()
Starting with volume 5 (January 2000), we will include book reviews in KOLAM within our section V. Miscellaneous. We will publish discussions of scholarly monographs related to the study of Tamil culture, of translations from Tamil into other languages, and of other books considered to be of interest to our readers.
Our readers are invited to contribute their reviews to this new section.
