India is the 7th largest country in area and the second largest in population.india is a very diverse nation stretching from the Great Himalayas in the north to the tropical peninsula in the south.the diversity extends to languages,cultures,Ethnic groups beliefs and life style.

India has 7 major languages and hundreds of dialects.Hindi is spoken by the largest number of people . Tamil, is considered India's oldest living language, Bengali boasts a rich literature. Though most of Indian languages are derived from Sanskrit, they have developed their own distinct script and literature.

When it comes to the field of art and architecture, the versatility is simple breath taking.the grandeur of the Moghul monuments especially the taj mahal, the stone carvings of the south indian temples and even the village homes built to suit the local climate are indeed a spectale for the eye.

But perhaps what gives India its mystic touch is the origin of so many religions Four major world religions Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism were founded here.muslims, christians and other minorities also live here in perfect harmony with each other.

The southern state of Tamil Nadu has a very ancient history that dates back to some 6000 years.the general theory is that the tamilians are of the Dravidian race who were pushed to the extreme south when the aryans came.When India became independent in 1947, Madras Presidency became Madras State, comprising Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, northern Kerala, and the southwest coast of Karnataka. In 1953 Madras State was bifurcated into two states: Andhra Pradesh, comprising the northern Telugu speaking areas, and Madras State, comprising the southern Tamil-speaking areas. Under the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, Madras State lost its western coastal districts to the states of Kerala and Mysore. In 1968, Madras State adopted a new name - Tamil Nadu. The capital city Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996.
